Packers Predicted To Extend $12.5 Million Star, Part Ways With 2 Starters in Free Agency

After an impressive run this season cut short by a loss to the San Francisco 49ers, the Green Bay Packers are entering the offseason with a goal of getting better. To achieve this, the franchise is projected to part ways with two players while extending Darnell Savage.

Even with Aaron Rodgers being traded to the New York Jets, the Packers managed to exceed expectations this season, thanks to a timely leap by Jordan Love. The end result is a surprising playoff run that ended, not only because of the 49ers, but by several mistakes the team made during that crucial game.

While Green Bay controlled most of the match, the final two minutes saw big mistakes being committed by Anders Carlson and Love. As a result, San Francisco advanced to the NFC Championship and eventually the Super Bowl to face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

This playoff exit has given the Packers a chance to get better, either via the draft or by signing free agents that can help make this goal possible.

Green Bay Packers Projected to Keep Darnell Savage While Letting Go of Two Key Guys to Free Agency

Apart from the draft, the Packers will have to retool their roster by choosing which of their players will stay and which of them will be let go. According to an analysis by Rob Demovsky:

“The youthful Packers don’t have a lot of must-sign free agents; running back AJ Dillon and guard Jon Runyan probably will have to seek jobs elsewhere. But [Darnell] Savage could be one to return. The 2019 first-round pick has been praised for his leadership and communication skills and would probably prefer to return to the Packers, who might be looking for two new starting safeties if they don’t bring back Savage. He had 51 tackles in 10 games in the regular season plus a key pick-six in Green Bay’s wild-card upset of [the] Dallas [Cowboys],” Demovsky wrote.

It only makes sense for the Packers to part ways with Dillon and Runyan since these two players weren’t that instrumental in the team’s performance this season. On the other hand, Savage’s extension is seen as a must since the safety has proven himself as a capable leader and contributor to the Packers’ success.

What moves the Packers will take in the offseason remains to be seen. What’s certain is that the franchise will be major players before and during the draft to infuse the team with more talent. In any case, Green Bay will be busy in the coming months before the new season starts.
