Chicago Cubs Minor League Wrap: May 24

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs routed Indianapolis (Pirates), 12-0.

Jordan Wicks made a rehab appearance in this game and looked just fine. He pitched two innings and gave up two hits and no runs. He struck out three and walked no one. Wicks threw 33 pitches and 22 of them were strikes.

Chris Clarke pitched the next four innings and got the win. Clarke also gave up two hits.He struck out three and walked just one.

Daniel Palencia pitched 1.2 innings of relief without allowing a baserunner. He struck out three. Palencia threw ten of his 24 pitches at 100 mph or above.

Center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong had ten total bases tonight, going 4 for 5 with three doubles and a home run. The home run came with the bases empty in the fourth inning and was his fifth for Iowa. Crow-Armstrong scored four times and drove in four.

In the seventh inning, right fielder Alexander Canario connected for a two-run home run, his seventh minor league home run this season. Canario went 2 for 5 with three RBI and two runs scored.

First baseman Matt Mervis went 2 for 5 with an RBI double.

Second baseman Miles Mastrobuoni was 2 for 4 with a walk and one run scored.

Catcher Bryce Windham went 3 for 4 with an RBI double. He also scored two runs.

Here’s the whole sequence where Crow-Armstrong homered off of Wily Peralta. Pretty impressive bat flip from Pete. Technically, the ball only traveled 400 feet.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies netted the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Marlins) 2-1.

Connor Noland dominated the Blue Wahoos for five innings and got the win. Noland allowed just one hit and no runs. He struck out three and walked one.

Frankie Scalzo Jr. pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for the save. He did not have a strikeout.

Left fielder Kevin Alcántara went 4 for 4 with an RBI double in the third inning. Alcántara scored when the next batter, third baseman Luis Verdugo, doubled him home. Verdugo was 1 for 4.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs skinned the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (Brewers), 6-1.

Starter Drew Gray pitched 4+ innings and gave up just one run on three hits. He did walk three batters while striking out two.

Jose Romero relieved Gray after he walked the first batter of the fifth inning. He let that runner score, but was awarded the win after a line of no runs on one hit and one walk He did not strike anyone out.

Sam Armstrong threw the final four innings without allowing a run and got the save. Armstrong allowed two hits, walked no one and struck out three.

South Bend scored five of their six runs in the third inning, all of which came after the first two batters of the inning were retired. DH Jefferson Rojas hit a two-run double in the third. Rojas finished the game with two doubles in a 2 for 4 game. He scored once.

Later on in the third, left fielder Jonathon Long hit a two-run home run, his third on the season. Long went 1 for 4.

Second baseman Pedro Ramirez went 2 for 4. He scored once and drove in one.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans got stuck by the Carolina Mudcats (Brewers), 12-4.

Ty Johnson started and got the loss after he allowed six runs on four hits over 2.2 innings. Johnson walked one, hit two batters and struck out five.

Third baseman Christopher Paciolla hit a solo home run in the second inning, his second of the season. Paciolla went 1 for 4.

Second baseman Cristian Hernandez went 2 for 4 with an RBI triple in the top of the first inning.
