Pittsburgh Pirates v Chicago Cubs

Iowa Cubs

The Iowa Cubs fell to the Syracuse Mets, 5-3.

Starter Julio Teheran got the loss after he was knocked around for five runs on six hits over just three innings. Teheran struck out five and walked one.

Ethan Roberts pitched a 1-2-3 fourth inning in his first game with Iowa since 2022. Roberts struck out one.

Zac Leigh made his Triple-A debut in the seventh inning, allowing no runs and one hit in the inning he threw. He struck out two and walked no one.

First baseman BJ Murray Jr. went 2 for 4 with a walk. He scored once.

Left fielder Bradlee Beesley was 2 for 3 with a walk.

Tennessee Smokies

The Tennessee Smokies were grounded by the Rocket City Trash Pandas (Angels), 2-0.

Starter Brandon Birdsell took the hard-luck loss after giving up just one run on five hits over four innings. Birdsell struck out three and walked one.

Dalton Moats threw three innings of relief in his Cubs organizational debut. He allowed one run on two hits with the run coming on a solo home run by former Cubs farmhand Tyler Payne. Moats struck out three and did not walk anyone.

The Smokies had four hits in this game, all singles, and walked just once. First baseman Moises Ballesteros went 1 for 2 and was hit by a pitch.

South Bend Cubs

The South Bend Cubs got slammed by the Ft. Wayne TinCaps (Padres), 9-6 in ten innings.

Starting pitcher Will Sanders gave the Cubs three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit. Sanders walked three and struck out two.

Tyler Schlaffer gave up five runs in the fourth inning. He pitched three total innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on five hits. Schlaffer walked one and struck out three.

Mitchell Tyranski retired the side in order in the ninth, but in the tenth inning, he walked the first batter he faced and then hit the second one to load the bases with no outs. The third batter he faced in the inning, Albert Fabian, connected for a walk-off grand slam.

The final line on Tyranski was four runs, three earned, on one hit over 1+ innings. He struck out one.

Center fielder Brett Bateman was 2 for 3 with a triple and a walk. He also stole two bases. Bateman scored three times and had one run batted in. Through 32 games, Bateman is hitting .331 with a .455 on-base percentage in the Midwest League.

Right fielder Parker Chavers was 2 for 4 with a walk and a stolen base.

Left fielder Jonathon Long was 2 for 4 with a walk.

Myrtle Beach Pelicans

The Myrtle Beach Pelicans died in committee against the Fredericksburg Nationals, 9-1.

Alfredo Romero started and took the loss after allowing four runs on seven hits over 3.1 innings. On the positive side, Romero struck out seven and walked just one.

Shortstop Cristian Hernandez doubled home third baseman Christopher Paciolla in the third inning with the only Pelicans run of the game. Hernandez was 1 for 4 and Paciolla was 2 for 4.
